2009 Reunion
Remembrances of General Jim Record

"We will always remember that young brown bar, who ended up putting stars in our eyes. He touched so many lives and WE will miss him." - Jim and Gail Harrington
"Jim was so important to all of our lives for such a long period of time--to me he was bigger than life and one of my great friends" - Mike Banks
"Your Laredo friends will miss you Jim." - Tony Melli  (read Tony's tribute to Jim here.)
"General Jim was truly a unique individual who was a patriotic warrior of the highest honor and a good friend.  " - JJ Paolino
"I am the wife of Col. Frederick "Mike" Banks, USAF (Ret).  Mike and Jim's longtime friendship began when they were Instructor Pilots together in Laredo, Texas back in the early '60's   They never lost touch, spoke often, and we last saw Jim at the 2007 Laredo AFB Reunion.  We spoke with Jim a week before his death - he sounded annoyed at his platelets, hopeful about his treatments and promised that he'd see us at the next reunion in 2011.  As is with everyone who knew him, Mike is devastated at the loss of his great friend." - Lin Banks

I worked with Gen Record at 12th AF. I had the privilege working with him during Roving Sands at Fort Bliss. When we had the chance he would invite me to watch golf with him. I was enlisted but it didn't matter to him he always treated everybody the same. When I left 12th Air Force and retired he would remember my name when I saw him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. - Jerald Welch USAF ret, Tucson, Arizona

Mrs. Record and the Record Family -- I am saddened to hear about the General's passing. I enjoyed our time together at Raytheon and our chats on the golf course. The Air Force and the Nation have lost a true American and a leader. You and your family are in my prayers. Respectfully, Michael R. Vela, Lt Col, USAF (Retired) - Michael Vela, Tucson, Arizona

I attented Michigantown,In high school and knew Jim and the Record family I was proud to tell my friends about his air force accomplisments, and living in San Antonio ran into military people who knew him.Last time I saw him was at a high school alumni function we talked and he offered me a ride in his phantom jet, I regret I did not take it.

I had the honor of working with Gen Record prior to his retirement from Raytheon in the Business Development Department. He was such a wonderful man who was always down to earth, professional, kind and had a terrific sense of humor and a fantastic laugh. He was also a man after my own heart as he kept a collection of his favorite quotes that he liked to share with us. It was a joy and honor to have known him and I am thankful to have had this opportunity. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Bless you all. - Laura Ostermeyer, Tucson, Arizona

I will sorely miss Boss Record's humor and advice. I will always appreciate his officiating at my retirement ceremony at Hill AFB and our continued friendship over the years. I have lost a good friend. He called me "Lemon Drop" for nearly 28 years. I have several notes from him and always signed that way. My sincere love, sympathy and prayers are with Peggy and the boys at this time. I will visit his final resting place in the Garden of Tombs at Arlington National Cemetery among the other heroes there the next time I am in DC. He will be missed.

My deepest sympathy to Mrs. Record and family. Gen Record is the man who gave me the opportunity to become the Comptroller at 12th Air Force in 1995. He had faith that I could do the job, and I cherish every moment I worked for this wonderful man. He used to stop by my office unannounced, sit down and put his feet on my desk, and say: "Money Bags, how much money do I have?" He was an absolute joy to work for. Everyone I knew at 12th Air Force adored Gen Record. He was the type of commander for whom even the civilian employees would take a bullet. I feel truly blessed and honored that he came to my retirement ceremony this past May. America has lost an awesome airman, patriot, and a true hero. May God bless his wonderful soul, and may he rest in peace. - Ruth Dunn, Tucson, Arizona

In my Christmas card, Jim wrote--What a year! Hopefully, 2010 will be a bit calmer! We are all devastated by the loss of our beloved Jim. How do you ever plan a ceremony to honor such An American Hero, Patriot and Warrior? Certainly makes one feel very, very inadequate but his 94 year old mom, his brother and sisters and numerous others will help get it pulled off on Jan.10 at the Michigantown Christian Church. I can hear Jim saying Thanks Dear but quit, quit, quit fusing over this. Just get on with the business of life. Words can not express how proud we are of him and how much we will miss him. A dream he did not accomplish was to be a Thunderbird flyer. Today Mom said that as the Supreme Commander gives out this last assignment, perhaps he'll grant Jim's wish to fly with the The Thunderbirds. Godspeed Dear Brother with your new set of wings. God has you on many Heavenly Missions.

I enjoyed the annual general officer meetings which Jim held. His professional competence, and engaging personal manner inspired all who attended. And I counted it an honor to be his friend. He brought distinguished credit to his beloved Air Force and the Armed Forces of the United States.

General Jim Record was my commander and next door neighbor when he was 12th Air Force commander and I was the Davis-Monthan wing commander. Later our paths crossed again during a year we were both in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He was a superb leader and a valued friend. I echo others in saying he was truly a Great American! - Roger Radcliff, Tucson, Arizona

Gen Records parents played cards with my Aunt and Uncle in Frankfort Indiana often and when they told his parents that they were coming to Davis-Monthan for my retirement from the Air Force, Gen Records mother called and told him that he should also attend my retirement. I personally did not know Gen Record and saw this man in a suit and tie at my ceremony and thought to myself 'I hope he wasn't an insurance man from AFA trying to sell be insurance after the ceremony.' Then my commander pulled me aside and read me the riot act for not notifying him there was a VIP attending my retirement. I told him, I didn't know he considered my parents VIP but..., he stopped me mid-sentence and corrected me by informing me that Gen. Record was in the second row. Image my surprise! After the ceremony, my aunt and uncle informed me of his mothers request that "Jimmy attend this retirement". I was able to speak with him afterward and felt honored and privileged to have him attend a very special event for me. Gen Record...Sir, I salute you. - Kathleen A. Koch, TSgt USAF(Ret) Niece of Junior and Kathleen Sheets.

General Record and I worked together in Saudi Arabia. He was a super leader, gentleman, friend and mentor. He was greatly respected by everyone he met. I recall one story, of many, that really summed up how people felt about Jim. I was attending a reception in Riyadh for then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Hugh Shelton. Just as I was about to introduce myself, General Shelton's aide started to hurry him off for his next appointment. I was able to get the General's attention and told him that Jim Record had asked me to pass on his regards. General Shelton turned to me and immediately said "Jim Record is a great American". He then spent the next 10 minutes talking about Jim much to the dismay of his impatient aide-de-camp! As it turns out this is the reaction I got whenever I mentioned Jim's name to anyone! He was a good man, a great American and he will be missed by many. Nancy and I have many fond memories of Jim from our time in Riyadh and want to express our heartfelt sympathy to Peg and the family and pray that their memories will give them comfort.

I served under Gen Record at Luke in the mid-80's. He was the most popular wing commander I served under, especially with the enlisted folks. He was a fine, fine man and I'm blessed to have known him. He was a faithful servant of our country.
John "Gibber" Gibbs, Col. USAF (Ret.) Austin, Texas

Lt Gen Record and I worked together at 12AF when he was the Vice and I was the Senior Enlisted Advisor. He was a tremendous commander and leader. His historical and cultural perspectives provided tremendous insight for the Air Force, particularly when engaged in combat operations. Sincere thanks to him for his dedicated service to our great Air Force and our great nation. - CMSAF (R) Eric Benken, San Antonio, Texas
